Keep Nature Native

An oakleaf hydrangea, which is native to Tennessee.

Why you and your yard benefit from planting plants native to Nashville.

After the deep freeze of 2022 where I lost several foundational plantings seemingly overnight, I made a conscious effort to plant or repopulate my garden beds with native to the area plantings.

Why?

  1. Native plants are hardy and adaptable! They’ve been around longer than we have, and are purpose built to withstand the weather fluctuations that are a part of living in Tennessee.

  2. Native plants require less maintenance!  Many exotic (non-native) plants can be fussy and require frequent prunings, since they are not designed for our climate.

  3. Native plants are beautiful! One look at an Oakleaf Hydrangea, a Crossvine in bloom or a Tulip Poplar in its full glory, and you’ll be hooked!

  4. Native plants promote our natural heritage and are a refreshing change to the overuse and “sameness” of landscapes created with exotic (non-native) plantings.

  5. Native plants require less pesticides and are environmentally friendly to bees, butterflies and other wildlife that call your backyard home.
